Missile Silo Is Imploded
This clip shows the actual demolition of a Launch Facility A-04 at Grand Forks AFB, ND, in July of 2000. The silo is drilled extensively to weaken the structure, then explosives are strategically placed to implode the silo and collapse the underground facility. This is done to comply with START Treaty ICBM force reduction. After the demolition has taken place, the silo is allowed to sir open for a time to allow Russian satellites to photograph and verify its destruction, and then the silo is filled in with gravel.
