MM III From Above
In this clip, shot from a helicopter-borne camera, you can get an excellent view of the massive wash of flame that bursts out of the silo just prior to the missile taking to the sky. Unlike previous silo-based ICBM's like Titan and Atlas, the Minuteman Silo is not equipped with any vents or buckets to vent thrust from the rocket motors, so it blasts down the short distance to the bottom of the launch tube, and back up alongside the missile, before the rocket even leaves the "hole".
Because this blast of flame is so powerful, it can cause "fatal" damage to the missile during launch if there is the slightest error in assembly or service of any of the missile components. Even a tiny leak past a bad seal or loose screw can be disasterous, so there are surgery-like measurements required when working on the missile's airframe - thus ensuring that the missile can withstand the hellish heat and damaging acoustic shock it endures during launch.
