MM III Day Launch - 1.4 Mb

Day Launch at Launch Facility 26

Another hi-quality clip from the image archive on the Vandenberg AFB website. This is the daytime launch of a Minuteman III from LF-26, near the northernmost edge of the base. The silo sits approximately 1-1/2 miles south of Point Sal Beach, and is easily visible from Point Sal Road as it passes over the mountain and winds toward the beach.

This silo was one of the more heavily used for test launches, as it was configured with equipment matching Grand Forks AFB and one squadron of missiles at Malmstrom AFB. With the closure of Grand Forks' missile field, the silo sees only occasional use, now.

If you want to attempt to watch a launch from here, it's a grandstand seat if you can get it, but not an easy task. About an hour or two before the launch window, security teams clear the beach at Point Sal, and also close the gate to the access road (about 6 miles from the beach, near Guadalupe.) If you can get there early, get onto a 4x4 or hiking trail in the area of the mountaintop, and stay inconspicuous, you may be treated to a ringside seat!
