MM II Nite Launch - 8.83 Mb

Night Launch

This hi-quality clip is courtesy of the image archive on the Vandenberg AFB website. It shows the spectacular night launch of a MM II missile on July 7, 2000. The Minuteman II has been decommisioned and is now in use by commercial concerns researching Low Earth Orbit satellite services. The Minotaur launch platform is one example of the recycled uses for Minuteman Missiles.

Though difficult to fully appreciate in a video, night-time launches of missiles are usually show stoppers. The white-hot engines are sometimes visible streaking through the sky hundreds of miles away, and it is possible to watch the spent stages tumbling away as well. In the immediate launch area, the black of night turns to day for a few moments as the thunderous roar vibrates your bones. Words are very inadequate to describe the experience of watching, hearing, and feeling the spectacle of a night launch; sheer power and dazzling brilliance reaching toward the stars.
