Now your Virtual Tour starts:
| 0500 HRS: Your day today begins by arriving at work nearly an hour early; while your "station time" is for 6 a.m., you will agree with the rest of the team to show up early in case of problems. Arriving at your workcenter located across a mall-sized parking lot from the 321SMW building, you gather your work package which gives you a mound of paperwork covering today's tasks on site, and pick up your mandatory "A-3 bag" full of cold-weather gear. As it is a balmy 20 F March day outside, you check to make sure everything is in the bag: mukluks, rubberized boots, overalls, "bunny" pants, "commie cap", work gloves, elbow high mittens - all insulated. Also wool socks and a sweater. You already have on an Arctic Parka. Most of this stuff you won't normally use; but you know from experience that sudden storms and windchill can turn that 20 F into -100 F, and freaky weather could strand you somewhere for days. |
| 0515 HRS: You and your team-member head out to a garage-like section of the building containing an equipment shop and drive-thru vehicle bays, where you inspect and load into your vehicle a huge cart full of electronic test gear, safety equipment, tool boxes, electronic drawer cases, and 2-man survival kits (in case you do get stranded). By the time all of this is rather strenuously stuffed and tied down in your vehicle, you couldn't add so much as a sack lunch. Amazingly, everything is there for you to sign for, no broken equipment, and supervisors and Quality Assurance Inspectors have decided not to show up and harrass you before you leave. Maybe this will be a good day! Your team then heads to the armory, where you check out .38 caliber pistols and strap them on - a requirement for the Top Secret code equipment you'll have along on this dispatch. |
| 0615 HRS: Equipment all packed, gun strapped at your hip, you head back to the 321SMW building. After stopping by a secure area known as KCCC, to pick up authentication codes materials for accessing the Launch Facility with, you and your team member split up. He goes to pick up any parts to be repaired or replaced on site, and check in with the "cop shack" to see if your Security Escort Team guards are ready. As Team Chief, you head to briefings from Job Control, the Traffic Control Center, and the Field Briefer, to get the latest information on any safety or security concerns, weather, road conditions, changes or additions in work orders, etc. Then your teamie joins you again so you can stop by the "Codes Vault" to pick up the Top Secret devices and tapes you will need to erase the launch codes from the missile so it can be pulled from the silo. Again, no major changes or problems...but the day isn't over yet. |
| 0655 HRS: Your team heads back to the shop for a final briefing by the workcenter supervisor. Your SET guards stay with the truck full of coded and classified stuff, guarding it with M-16 rifles. Once briefed, you are finally ready to depart base for the missile field. As you hop in the truck behind the wheel, your teammate gets on the radio and notifies the Traffic Control Center and Job Control that you are departing base. Since you are carrying code materials, you will have to make timed security check-ins and also confirm passing specific checkpoints along your route, so that you can be tracked in case of trouble. Your truck rolls out the gate, starting the long, 2 hour drive to the Launch Facility - roads are still packed with ice and snow, but at least last week's icestorm that left many power poles and trees down is over. |
