Since the Facilities Manager (FM) has some cleanup tasks to perform downstairs in the tunnel junction, he and your team will be entering the elevator through the front access doors, instead of the door in the FSC's office. The FSC office door to the elevator has a remote lock, controlled by electrical signal from the LCC's crew; the front access doors are normally used for bringing oversized equipment into the elevator, and are locked with a padlock. After the FM unlocks the double doors, you get your first view of the freight elevator inside.
Stepping into the elevator, you can see the artwork adorning the rear wall. Usually this artwork is themed to mirror Missile Squadron or Wing shoulder patches, but some Launch Control Facilities get creative - or just plain bored - and do some interesting paint jobs on the elevator and shaft, even the tunnel junction underground. As the elevator begins to decend, the Facilities Manager gives you a short safety briefing on any hazards in place in the underground portion of the facility.
Following the slow elevator ride down to the tunnel junction, you exit the elevator and follow the FM to toward the huge door to the Launch Facility Equipment Building (LCEB). This underground capsule shaped structure holds the power and environmental equipment that supports the Launch Control Center(LCC). The Facilities Manager has asked you to assist him as a "Safety Buddy" to watch him while he performs some tasks inside the LCEB.
Looking back up the elevator shaft, you can just see the daylight coming through the gate at the surface level door. The underground portion of the facility is buried so deep to provide protection from anything but a direct hit from a nuclear bomb.
Over your shoulder, you can see the smaller blast door leading to the Launch Control Center (LCC) is open, as the crew awaits your team.
